AMBASSADORS CLUB OF EBEN BOOKLET 2019 15 Our commitment for a sustainable planet Shipping is the safest and the least environmentally damaging form of commercial transportation, very economical in its use of energy and critical to the world trade. ENTERPRISES SHIPPING AND TRADING S.A. is committed to the protection of the environment and most importantly of the marine environment in which it operates, by preventing amongst others the pollution of sea aiming at “zero” oil spill incidents. Preventive actions include the continuous training of crewmembers in accordance with existing procedures concerning bunkering and cargo transfer operations and through their participation in “environmental emergency and preparedness” exercises. Of similar importance is the enhancement of our ships daily operational activities with the aim to control and/or minimize those activities with an environmental impact. Improving our overall corporate environmental footprint in all our operations is a major and continuous priority and all employees ashore and onboard are expected to conduct their work in a manner compatible with the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. Environmental Management System As part of ENTERPRISES SHIPPING AND TRADING S.A.’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, an Environmental Management System has been developed. This document aims to present a thorough assessment of the interactions between the environment and the operational activities of the company and the vessels as per ISO 14001 standard requirements. The Environmental Management System includes programs and plans on major issues of environmental concern within the shipping industry, such as garbage management, ballast water, energy conservation and fuel consumption. Garbage Management Program: Aims to reduce the quantity of garbage generated onboard. The below list includes examples of the guidance incorporated into the Garbage Management Plan to achieve the reduction of waste on-board: • Avoid excessive packaging materials from ship’s supplies and provisions. • Use potable water instead of bottled water. • Avoid supplies that are packaged in plastic. • Consider further segregation of “domestic” waste (glass, metal, paper). • Purchase less-toxic cleaners. • Choose products that use less packaging and buy in bulk. • Request minimal packaging when buying provisions in bulk. • Discharge all packaging materials originated from delivery supplies before leaving the port • Use both sides of the printing paper before recycling it. • Dispose e-waste to Certified Recycle Companies. Energy conservation & Fuel consumption Management program: Aims to reduce / optimize fuel consumption & emissions (SOx, NOx, GHG, CO2, PM). The following are ways to improve energy efficiency: • Optimisation of vessel’s trim. • Speed optimisation, where practical. • Weather routeing. • Optimisation of onboard power management such as the use of generators and boilers. • Propeller polishing/cleaning. • Hull cleaning. • Use of the most efficient method of ballast water exchange/ treatment. Ballast Water Management Program: Aims to reduce the risk of transferring (from one location to another) species of sealife that may prove ecologically harmful when released into a non-native environment. Ballast water is water carried in ships’ ballast tanks to improve stability, balance and trim. It is taken up or discharged when cargo is unloaded or loaded. Certification against ISO 14001 & ISO 50001 Company’s commitment to the environmental protection is evident since 2002 when the company was the first shipping company in Greece that was awarded with the ISO 14001 certificate. Also, EST has been certified with the ISO 50001:2011 since 2012. The standard requires an energy management system, an action plan to measure and manage the energy usages, a baseline to set targets, programs and practical measures to ensure energy conservation.
