AMBASSADORS CLUB OF EBEN BOOKLET 2019 33 ATHANASIOS C. LASKARIDIS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION “A good-natured Typhoon ” The Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation was established out of love for Greece - its people, its sea and its culture. Its activity focuses on protecting the marine environment as well as on taking action against marine pollution; supporting employment and entrepreneurship; supporting vulnerable groups; and promoting transparency and accountability in all facets of public life. The Foundation designs and implements its own programs, collaborates with other institutions in joint actions, as well as supports actions of other organizations in its main areas of interest. Its aim is to act as a catalyst on vital issues for Greece, both autonomously and through efficient partnerships. SEA CHANGE GREEK ISLANDS contributes decisively to changing the way we connect with the sea. The program intervenes effectively in the protection of the marine environment by taking multilevel action on ten islands of the Cyclades, under the auspices and with the cooperation of the local authorities. It encourages citizens to value the environment, raise awareness towards it, help preserve the beauty of nature and work in partnership with other actors in order to protect our key asset. For its most recent TYPHOON PROJECT, the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation recruits the «Typhoon», a Norwegian-built 72 meter long vessel that contributes to the cleaning of coastal and underwater areas. In addition to modern maritime navigation systems, the vessel features 5 speed boats approach and clean inaccessible shores and large containers suitable for sorting recyclables collected during operations. The Typhoon Project team, consisting of Foundation executives and other staff members, launched its activities in late July, cleaning inaccessible shores in the Cyclades, Crete and the Saronic Gulf and removing over 20 tons of marine litter. The ship operates year-round, in collaboration with non-governmental organizations, research actors and academic institutions.
